The Personal, the Process, The Gathered

June in New England gives a fast but generous outpour of linden blossoms. It is one of my favorite moments of the year; I feverishly gather all that I can when the moment is right, as it could rain at any moment, and if it rains too long the moment is vanished. I often keep baskets bags and clippers in my car, making sure to be opportunistic.

Linden trees are versatile here – the decorative ones (little leaf linden, also called lime trees in France) are planted along the borders of large landscapes, and native Linden trees (tilia americana) which are much larger and bear larger leaves and flowers grow abundantly near the Connecticut river and new England waterways. The inner bark is also used for fiber such as jute rope and native cordage.

But the flowers. The flowers … the aroma the floats on the breeze is divine. Kayaking along the river is made blissful by this, as I can often smell the flowers before the trees appear in the landscape. The fragrant blossoms draw the local honey bees to drink.
